FIRST THINGS, Michael Getman, Israel
"Imagine it.
A world where there is no distance between it and our knowledge of it. How, then, to speak about it? Perhaps we are left entirely focused on tuning ourselves inward as one tunes an instrument to achieve precision.
First Things focuses on the different aspects of the performer’s experience of himself in the world. Each part starts from a simple premise; one body-one point in space, one body-one beat, one body-one word. Gradually, an accumulation of tasks challenges the performer to hold on to the existing structure, eventually creating a fracture in the fabric of the choreography and unravelling a new emotional and visceral horizon. First Things peeks between what is being said and what is said between the lines- brick by brick, a personal attempt to touch the humane — a visible trap."

Michael Getman is a Tel Aviv-based choreographer. In the work he has developed, he examines and is curious about the relationship between our bodily actions, cognitive responses, the particular and the abstract, and the ability to respond to the ongoing demands of experience with a range of physical arousal and emotions. He is commissioned to create and share artistic experiences utilizing various choreographic expressions. His dance education started with his grandmother in a small living room, followed by the ballet master Rose Kassel at the Bat Dor School of Dance, directed by Mrs. Jennette Ordman. His professional dancing career started with an invitation from Naomi Perlov to join the Batsheva ensemble. After a year, he was invited to join the leading Batsheva dance company. Between 1999 and 2005, he danced in Ballet Freiburg Pretty Ugly and Ballet Saarbrucken in Germany. As a young performer, he was privileged to learn and interpret works by Ohad Naharin, Amanda K Miller, Marguerite Donlon, and William Forsythe. Michael was awarded choreographic prizes at the 2008 Cross Connection Ballet international choreography contests in Denmark and the International Choreographic Competition No Ballet, 2014, in Germany.
Michael holds a master’s degree (M.A.) from the University of Huddersfield, England.
